Welcome to your gateway to paradise! Whether you’re jetting off for a sun-kissed vacation or exploring the treasures of the Yucatán Peninsula, Cancún International Airport (CUN) is your first stop. This bustling hub can be a bit overwhelming, especially for first-timers. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with all the essential information you need to navigate this airport like a pro.
Arrival:
Once you deplane, you will be directed to go through immigration. There are two pathways you can choose. Depending on the day, one line may be shorter than the other. Pay attention to the person in front of you and have your passport in your hand at all times. This ensures the process goes smoothly for everyone.
After immigration, proceed to the carousel and collect any checked bags.
On your way out of the terminal, you may be selected by customs to have ALL of your bags searched. This can be a pretty lengthy time process, but they are just doing their job. Cooperate with their instructions and you will get done as quickly as possible.
You will then pass through sliding doors where there will be a ton of people trying to sell you various things. I HIGHLY recommend to just keep your head down, ignore every single one of those people and proceed outside where you will then find your desired transportation.
Custom Rules You May Not Know:
It is illegal to bring e-cigarettes of any kind into Mexico. It is not illegal to purchase or use while in destination.
You are only allowed ONE tablet. This means you can bring either a laptop or an iPad, but not both. Kindle or Nook readers do not count.
You can only have up to 10 cigarette packs, 25 cigars or 200 grams of tobacco. Let’s say you purchase a carton that contains 10 packs because you want to bring some home, but you already have an opened pack in your personal belongings. You are now over the maximum limit and may be fined.
Getting There and Away:
Private transportation: Setting up your transportation ahead of time, such as pre-booking airport shuttles or arranging a private transfer, can significantly streamline your arrival experience in Cancún, allowing you to bypass the hassle of negotiating fares and dive straight into enjoying your vacation.
By Bus: ADO buses are a convenient and affordable option to get to and from the airport. They connect you to Cancún’s downtown, Playa del Carmen, and even further afield.
Taxi: While readily available, taxis can be a bit pricey. Always agree on the fare before you start your journey, or even better, book through an official operator inside the terminal.
Car Rental: Numerous car rental agencies are available right at the airport. This option gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Check-in and Security Tips:
Timing: Arrive at least 3 hours before your international flight. Cancún is a busy airport and queues can be long. TSA Precheck does not work here as this is a domestic program only.
Documentation: Keep your passport and travel documents handy. For a faster check-in process, have your boarding pass printed or saved on your mobile device.
Security: Be prepared for thorough checks. Ensure your carry-on luggage adheres to the international liquid restrictions, and remove laptops and large electronics during the screening. You may also be required to remove your shoes.
Facilities and Services:
Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available, so you can stay connected and share your status updates or last-minute emails.
Dining: Whether you’re craving traditional Mexican cuisine or just a quick snack, there are plenty of options. Don’t miss out on trying some local treats!
Shopping: From last-minute souvenirs to luxury goods, the duty-free shopping experience is robust. Perfect for those who love a good shop before they fly!
Visitax:
This is a mandatory tourism tax that applies to international visitors to Quintana Roo, including Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and other surrounding locations. It is not highly enforced, but neither are seatbelts. Yet if you get caught driving without a seatbelt, you will be fined. Pricing is subject to change but as of April 1, 2021 the cost is 224 pesos (approximately $11USD depending on the exchange rate). Recommend paying this prior to arrival by visiting the official website: https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/
Lounge Access:
For those seeking a little extra comfort, the airport offers several lounges where you can relax and escape the hustle and bustle. Access can be purchased at the door or is complimentary with certain travel credit cards.
Family Travel Made Easy:
Traveling with kids? Family-friendly amenities, including nursing rooms and play areas, are located throughout the terminals.
With these tips, you’re now ready to conquer Cancún International Airport and start your holiday stress-free! Remember, traveling is all about the experience – and every moment counts, starting at the airport. If you are overwhelmed, I can help. I have traveled through this airport numerous times and each visit is a different experience.
